I have over the years read so many articles on ethnopharmacology and have noticed almost all have used graded doses of a named extract and administered to laboratory animals be it per os or intra peritoneally.
Nearly all crude extracts of medicinal plants are administered to the laboratory animals orally by using of a gavage. They are given in doses over a period of time to prevent the high doses toxicity (if present) and to become similar to the sustained release doses to provide a continuous occurrence of the therapeutic active ingredients to fight the disease under investigation.
Graided dose administration of plant extract aims at achieving or determining therapeutic dose(s) that is/are NOT or LESS harmful to the treated subject. Establishing LD50 of the extract may also be an indication of a graided dose administration.
