A research proposal is intended to convince others that you have a worthwhile research project and that you have the competence and the work-plan to complete it. Generally, a research proposal should contain all the key elements involved in the research process and include sufficient information for the readers to evaluate the proposed study.
Regardless of your research area and the methodology you choose, all research proposals must address the following questions: What you plan to accomplish, why you want to do it and how you are going to do it.
research synopsis
The research synopsis is the plan for your research project. It provides the rationale for the research, the research objectives, the proposed methods for data collection and recording formats and/or questionnaires and interview guides. The synopsis is based on the information provided by the supervisor(s) and by secondary sources of information. In the final report you will present the results of your data collection and elaboration, with the discussion and the conclusion.
The full synopsis should be maximum 3-4,000 words, excluding appendices.

Research proposal is prepared before the actual research begins. It includes points mentioned by Mr. Javed. It is important to prepare to avail approval or funds for the project.
Synopsis is brief report of research work and is mandatory for Ph. D. students before thesis submission.
A project proposal is prepared for submission to granting authority, Scientific committee or any such committee for the purpose of getting approval, or research grant as the case may be. It is a detailed document containing a formal application to the authority concerned, background and justification for proposed research, research protocol, time required and details of expenditure under different heads for the purpose of grant.
Synopsis is a brief description of research usually submitted before submission of Final Report/Thesis to the concerned authority.
A good response indicating the differences of proposal and synopsis. But I always wonder why we need limitations in a proposal and what do they entail? Anyone please elucidate on the Limitations component in proposal.
I see synopsis as a summary of your research, which should be a few pages, while proposal has to be more detailed.
in a proposal, each of the headings mentioned above must be stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt. One is expected to pay attention to justification and methodology.
A research proposal is a detailed description of a proposed study when you want to start a new study. The proposal contains breif introduction, the problem statement, aims and objectives, methodology as well as underlining the feasibility and out put of the proposed research work. A research proposal may be written by a student to start a new project or by professor etc to obtain fundings from funding agencies.
A synopsis contains the above mentioned featurs but it is written by a student to prove his co.competency for an ongoing project.
A research proposal is a document containing all steps such as title, aim, objectives, background, problem statement, literature review, knowledge gap and preliminary work (if any), approach, resources and budget, deliverables and timeline with milestones; where as synopsis, so called summary is the brief description of the proposal, may be about a page or two.
I think, Proposal is a formal document to ask the permission form the authority or university to do the proposed work where as the synopsis is the summary of the proposed work (research) which may not be in formal document. proposal is submitted to authority where as synopsis is draft which is bring while discussion with proposed supervisor in first meting.
A proposal is a an outline of your proposed project that is designed to:
· Define a clear question and approach to answering it.
· Highlight its originality and/or significance.
· Explain how it adds to existing literature in the field.
. Persuade potential supervisors or funders of the importance of the work, and why you are the right person to undertake it .
Generally, a proposal should be around 3,000 words which you write as part of the application process.

Research statement:
Research statement is different from proposal because a Research Proposal is intended as a pitch for a specific project, or the research program you will undertake within a specific time frame (such as a PhD or a post-doc). Whereas a Research Statement is used as an outline of the research you have already completed, and what you plan to pursue next. So your Research Statement will describe your doctoral thesis as a finished product, and list the publications generated by your doctoral work and any subsequent projects. It must not be as lengthy as proposal.
