I seek your input concerning relevant sources on the above. Do you have research-based article that indicate how African women are affected by climate change, global warming and other related environmental crisis?
The impact of environmental degradation on people, and access to and power over natural resources. This brief gives an overview of the linkages between gender and the environment in development cooperation and how policy and programmes can facilitate a more sustainable use of resources, while empowering women at the same time, For details cosult https:www.sida.se - gender and the environment. Issues related to women, environment and develop-ment constitute a major global concern today. More details consult https://scholarcommons.usf.edu also https://opentextbc.ca -- womenintheworld
Climate change affects all people, across gender, ethnicity and geographic area. Women play a very important role in Africa (and also in many other countries) for things concerned with food production. Therefore, the changes occurring on the landscape (e.g.: deforestation, desertification, soil loss due to erosion, loss of biodiversity) are some of the symptoms brought about by climate change. Women empowerment and education is an imperative call (in my opinion) to counteract the devastating effects of global climate change. Check out the latest report/s of FAO (United Nations Organization of Food and Agriculture), although I doubt that you may find as specific information as requested by your question. Statistics about nutrition (especially children's and infants' nutrition/malnutrition) could give you an idea of women's role in securing food for their families and communities.
Women are the most affected by environmental challenges. They interact most with aspects of the environment. Climate Change, land degradation and global warming are adversely affecting women's livelihood. Food security, and household livelihood is greatly contributed by the women who greatly depend on environment for provision. Women are characterized with subsistence farming and their interaction with the environment described as social interaction. Environmental crisis (climate change, land degradation) is sabotaging women livelihood and making them more poorer.
In addition to the recommended books, journal and publications in previous answers, i would recommend you read a book by Jane S Jaquette and Gale Summerfield (2006) Women and Gender Equity in development Theory and Practice: Institution, Resources and Mobilization.
That is an interesting question. I would love to hear from you if you have some leads, although it is not my direct quest. Most eco-feminist works point out how women's intimate relationship with the land as users of its resources for their households, become the first to notice grave environmental damage, such as pollution of water, or lack of it; deforestration, even the poisoning of the food chain that is manifested by the deformation of the fetus makes women one of the first groups to be impacted and to notice.
Climate change has indubitably a greater impact on those parts of the world whereby people are most reliant on natural resources for their livelihoods and are not well equipped to cope with natural hazards such as droughts, landslides, floods , hurricanes and so on. Naturally at such times, women commonly face higher risks and greater burdens from climate change . Unfortunately, the situation worsens because of women’s unequal participation in decision-making processes . Such inequalities often prevent women from fully contributing to climate-related planning, policy-making and implementation regarding the unwanted displacement policies by which they have to move to new places because of the impending hazards defined by climatic change.
Climate change has a negative bearing on the wellbeing of women. But i think women's role in the heightening of climate change should also be considered.
I must be honest, I do not think we have deconstructed or critisized the assumed link between women and nature thoroughly enough. I have written a chapter on this that is in the review stage, and will be able to send you some sources if you still need some more.
