Media can be used in almost any discipline to enhance learning, both in class, and also for out-of-class assignments. Short film and television clips, written articles, and blog postings can be viewed to reinforce concepts and spark discussion. Songs and music videos, especially when the lyrics are made available, can be used to the same effect.

for lecturing in mechanical Engineering I used Videos since 1980 and own clips since 1995 and you tube since 2000. The key role of these excellent visual medias are obvious: you are able to bring a part of the reality into classroom. The understanding of processes or machines or apparatus or fundamental happenings/operations is phantastic.You don´t learn reality but students are closer to it. And it is a didactic nessesity to change different methods during a lecture. How boring is it for students haveing the teacher hour and hour infront of you always talking.

Visual Media are rich opportunities for students and teachers to develop communication skill,. basing learning in sense experience,extending experience, encouraging participation, stimulating interest ,individualizes instructions
Complementing the good comments, I would add that visual media must be always put in context and it might be always integrated with a good theoretical base. Visual Media must not become the resting pace of lazy instructors, using it as a good excuse not to prepare lessons or getting wrong the fundamentals of education. It is easy to discover when Visual Media is used as a parachute when there are not real arguments. Only when the educator stands in an excellent theoretical principle, Visual Media become not only meaningful, but inquiring. It means also planning, preparation, a good selection of visual material, a custom to update information and an invitation to participate in a dynamic of critical thinking and analysis.
I endorse all the previous answers. So I will keep my answer short. Suppose I want to read some course but my academic curriculum does not offer that course. Then I can read that course via online courses offered by several good universities. There are certain books are very costly which a poor student can't afford. So he/she can rely on the online videos.

I use English songs on You Tube for teaching English in kids' classes. They find them very interesting.

Key roles of visual media in Learning are necessity, creativity and motivation
NECESSITY
- For Communication faculty - the different type of visual media enrich the students' experience to create good post-production product
- For Medical faculty - the animation is necessary to identify the near replica of human anatomy especially when comes to identifying veins and arteries
CREATIVITY
- to break the monotony of the students from the use of white or black board thus introducing interests so that students do not sleep during class
MOTIVATION
- to encourage students to keep coming to school, study and become IT an education-literate.
Visual media in Learning is gaining place and becoming a necessity in this IT world. The students are exposed to such media at a tender age. To do away with such use would limit the creativity aspects of what they are learning. Without such motivation. visual media are just tools without any good use.
