Conflict in global south is expanded from country to country since 2011, the impact on public health is getting obviou. As a researcher what the interesting area will draw your attention to work on?
I will be interested in seeing the impact of conflict after controlling for other determinants of health. You may compare countries with and without conflict if secondary data are available.
Epidemiologically, it would be interesting to see what the effect of armed and other forms of conflict has on various outcomes, such as the incidental of mental disorders (e.g., PTSD, depression, substance use disorders).
It depends on what resources you have to do a research in conflict beaten areas. Also it depends on whether you yourself or some other people do the work. The choice of a topic for research is fairly wide. You can study the effect on childhood malnutrition, childhood infections, and as colleague suggested mental problems are also good choice for research.
we have recently participated in a multicentric study (awaiting publication) with particularly vulnerable tribal groups and one of the determinants being studied was conflict. one of the most important findings was the impact upon health care services and personnel. of course, mental health issues including PTSD were important outcomes. we also used an intersectionality lens to determine that the impact was highest amongst the most vulnerable, namely women and children. the use of sexual violence in conflict situations is also an important issue to study and document but requires a high level of investigator skill.
