I am learning a bit of modelling in soils, special movement of Nitrates in soil layers, and I am not so sure about the influence of simulation layers in the model. It is supposed that I am using for example 5 simulation layers, and the results present some higher picks of NO3 leaching in comparison with a simulation with 10 simulation layers. What it is the meaning of those simulation layers?. I guess, I am dividing the soils in small layers and the simulation is done per each, so the more layers, it would be more accurate since it is closer to the reality, am I right?. Thanks a lot for your help

The simulation layers refers to the physical number of layers that your soil column has. Lets say; the A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, soil horizons, and so on. Any soil physical layer or soil horizon has a strong influence on the transport of water and contaminants (Nitrates in your case) in soil columns and of course in real soils. Make sure you count properly these soil layers in soils were you had extracted your soil columns and run your simulation models. Most simulation models would underestimate the concentration of Nitrates in water at the bottom of the soil column. This is so because water and contaminants move at a higher rates in macroporous soils. And of course more advanced models would also require the macropore size and longitude that bypass the soil layers in the column and makes water and contaminant transport to move at higher rates than expected by potential flow theory.
