I believe we just have started to see (or realize) how big data change the way we live. This actually is an example of how big information can be weaponized to change the results. Actually, the core idea is not different from the past. Many people used any information to manipulate the results. Its all about ethics. The only difference is the amount of data today. However, the main difference is this effect can have an exponential growth, since we just do not know the possibilities.
I wouldn't blame the technology but how we use it and most likely the interpretation of ones understanding for the proposed story. In recent times when a story is related the words that was may be brought across the public differently causing a different reaction or interpretation of what the message was about or what was said.
Agree, you need to understand just what a powerful tool Facebook is (or any of the other social media platforms) and hence how other actors may choose to use it.
It is also important to understand how your online data can be used, particularly if you tend to use on app to gain access to multiple other online sites..

Dear, Chandana, if news content on social media contains negative things which of course can damage democracy, now the influence of social media is very large on public opinion or citizens, because the internet has spent everyday life, how do you block negative content on social media? certainly very difficult.
