At what point (concentration) is sulphate lethal to phytoplankton?
Any relationship between sulphate concentration and algal growth and development?
How can one contruct an experiment to determine the effect of sulphate concentration on phytoplankton?
Sulphur is an essential macroelement that plays important roles in living organisms. Algae take in Sulphur as sulphate which helps in the overall metabolism of algal cells and the maintenance of homeostasis. The deficiencies of sulphate in algae will have a negative impact on photosynthesis because it will affect the rate at which it assimilates carbon and nitrogen and this will surely have an impact on algal growth.
I am not so sure though but I think there may be a need to carry out optimization research to determine sulphate lethality. You may also look out for research done in that line. I don't know of any as at this moment.
