Chikate and Sadawarte (2015) revealed that solar panel as a technology usually has conversion efficiency of 6% - 20 % in commercial use. Environment Canada (2012) stated that efficiency of mono-crystalline silicon PV module range between 14% and 20%.

The most efficient solar panels with the latter on the market today have efficiency ratings as high as 22.2%, whereas the majority of panels range from 15% to 17% efficiency rating. But it all depends upon the irridance (G) factor which is not constant throughout the day. In practical terms, a solar panel system with a total rated capacity of 5kW (kilowatts) could be made up of either 20 250-Watt panels or 16 300-Watt panels. Both systems will generate the same amount of power in the same geographic location.
SunPower produces the highest efficiency monocrystalline solar panels available. Our X22 has a record-breaking efficiency of up to 22.8 percent, making it the best performing panel on the market today. Polycrystalline panel efficiency typically ranges from 15 to 17 percent.
I don't think efficiency is the most important parameter, because in this case the solar energy input is free (if it wasn't then of course efficiency is critical). Assuming you have the space you can trade weight for efficiency and get the same output. In space of course you can't do this so you need absolute maximum efficiency, and you use gallium arsenide panels. But on the ground mono silicon is fine and mass production has made it the most cost effective in terms of price per delivered watt hour. Multijunction panels are only fine for space because (as the manufacturers don't tell you ) they are very spectrally sensitive and need all the currents generated in each layer to balance to a very high accuracy. Otherwise it's like having three conventional panels in series with varying shading on them. Very large losses in efficiency for quite modest mismatches.
