Hello Babette; I'm familiar with an old method. Track boards were used to determine the presence of small mammals. The method used a sheet of card stock with a strip of printer's ink rolled across the center. The card was placed on a game trail and left overnight. The damp ink was stepped on by a passing critter. The foot prints left by the inked foot can usually be determined to genus.
The method was non-intrusive and the animals' behavior didn't seem to be disturbed. The method has largely been replaced by trail cameras. You might find some old papers in journals like Wildlife Management, California Dept. Fish and Game Bulletin and similar publications. Best regards, Jim Des Lauriers

indeed, recording tracks, signs and other traces of wild animals ranks among some of the key methodologies in this field. Nowadays, live tracking devices with which animals can actually be equipped with as well as drone surveillance, stationary cameras, various sensors and other technology add to this portfolio. In terms of precise methodological approach and empirical requirements, I'd say that every instance would have to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In extreme cases, e.g., even one single visual confirmation of a speciemen - be it directly or remotely - may constitute a highly valuable data point even in a fairly large area. By contrast, in cases of larger populations in, e.g., a medium-sized area, more data points would be needed to ascertain ranges, precise population sizes etc. So a lot depends on the species/taxa involved, population numbers, natural environment etc.

Tracking is a skill which is sorely lacking in this day and age! I was taught by my father starting at 11 years old. I use it every day I am in the field. It will direct you to populations of animals and choke points where you can best set your game cameras or attractants.
Tracking is a very valuable tool in your field arsenal. Photographing effectively (with a scale and directing the shadow cast on the track), and making plaster casts of tracks will also aid you in developing that skill.
