Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is considered one of the best marker for the activation of astrocytes (AS) following injury or stress in the central nervous system (CNS). In certain neurological disorders, activation of astrocytes contributes to dysfunction and degeneration of the neuron. On the other side, numerous studies reported that GFAP is considered neurogenesis marker and GFAP positive astrocyte contribute to neuroprotection. It is also reported that antidepressant increases GFAP expression in the hippocampus. Now the question is arises, what is the exact role of GFAP positive astrocyte in neurological and psychiatric disorders? And how it regulate neurodegeneration and adult neurogenesis?
