I have worked with Comsol Multiphysics, where effective index calculation is quite easy. You can tryout using comsol,Module Electromagnetics waves, frequency domain, modal analysis. Most of the parameters like beta, k, neff can be obtained directly.

I have used Comsol. But now I don't want to use any commercial software except Matlab for finding out neff. Can you help ?
