Hepcidin is an iron-regulating peptide hormone made in the liver. It controls the delivery of iron to blood plasma from intestinal cells absorbing iron, from erythrocyte-recycling macrophages, and from iron-storing hepatocytes.
In iron metabolism, Hepcidine, a major regulatory peptide, controls the expression of Ferroprotein, a transmembrane protein. It is responsible for transportation of iron from the inside to outside of a cell. Iron transportation by the said ferroproteln plays a major role by stimulating iron absorption from enterocytes, hepatocytes and macrophages.
