The Shannon-Wiener index values (H' loge) is generally in the range of 0 to ~4.6 using natural log (loge). A value near 0 would indicate that every species in the sample is the same and near 4.6 would indicate that the number of individuals are evenly distributed between all the species.

The Shannon-Wiener range depends from ln of the number of bands you have, so it's difficult to interpret the results in gels where you have different number of bands, while is a good index for others measures where there are a fixed number of readings (e.g.: optical densities in a microplate). For Dgge gels with variable number of bands between samples, other indexes give equivalent results with easier interpretation: 

Reciprocal Simpson diversity index 1-D= 1-Σi(ni/N)2  ni = intensity of a band = number of individual of some population into the community. N = sum of all bands = total number of community's individuals. ( 0 to 1 index) 

Simpson diversity index is related to Simpson evenness index with the relationship:  1-D / 1-(1/M) where M is the number of species. It also measure biodiversity by  species dimension, but is a 0 to 1 index.
