- Spectrometer is the measuring device, the instrument
- Spectroscope is also a device, but for visual inspection of the spectrum. So, a "Raman spectroscope" is hardly feasible, due to the faintness of the Raman signal.
You can further differentiate between spectrometer and photometer:-)
- photometer: measuring absorbance or transmittance at a single wavelength
- spectrometer: measuring absorbance or transmittance fro a whole spectrum of wavelengths
In books, authors write Spectroscopy for the instrument. So, I work on a dissertation and I am lost between Raman Spectroscope or Spectroscopy or spectrometer!!!!
The terms are confusing. The original spectroscope was a prism. Combining a prism (spectroscope) with a protractor for measurement was called spectroscopy. The incorporation of a diffraction grating instead of a prism was often called a spectroscope and spectroscopy, but to indicate more precision, spectrometer and spectrometry were used. Other methods included crystal diffraction and electrometer methods. In general, to indicate the difference in methods spectrometer and spectrometry were used. The primary difference is when using optical (vision) techniques and manual control, spectroscope is used, when using electronic means, spectrometer is used. The terms are often interchanged in the literature.
