A moderator is a contexcual variable describes the fluctuation in the effect X on Y. Meanwile, a covariate is a variable that could influence the effect of the X on the Y; it is therefore measured and its results are controlled for to determine the “pure” causal effect of X on Y. For me they have similar meaning and do same job. In many cases, researchers include a moderator as a covariate and propose its moderation effect. Such moderator is known as quasi-moderator. My questions are:

what is the main differences between Moderator and covariate?

What is the the theoretical considerations that differentiate moderators from covariates?

How can we statisticaly tmake sure that a moderator is infact a moderator not a covariate?
