I extracted the surface downwelling shortwave radiation from CanESM2 Global Circulation Model in CMIP5, and I want to use it as an input of TMY file, But in TMY file we have Global horizontal radiation, Direct normal radiation, and Diffuse horizontal radiation. Is it possible to use surface downwelling short wave radiation as global horizontal radiation or not? Are they the same or not?

This is a good question. I found that the average surface shortwave radiation data from downscaled GCMs is about 20-25% higher than Global horizontal radiation for a given location. The difference might be related to the methodology of the GCMs or biases in reanalysis data. See Article Evaluation of the Reanalysis Surface Incident Shortwave Radi...
But I really don't know the exact reason for the discrepancy. So if anyone has the answer please post it here.
