What is the difference between shock and strut? Do wheel have to be realigned when strut are replaced?

If you mean shock like "shock absorber" resp strut like "control arm" (check wikipedia - the descriptions there should be able to help you !):

The shock absorber has some degree of freedom while the control arm defines geometry - allowing only for movements in the vertical direction. Thus, when replacing elements of the control arm: yes - wheel alignment has at least to be checked.
