A quantum dot confine particles (such as electrons) with a certain wavelength, it can be of certain nanometre size, but how is it different from nano dot?
Quantum Dot has size between 0-10 nm, while Nano particle has size above 10 nm - 100 nm. Due to the confinement effect in QD size, the optical energy gap will be larger. The quantum confinement effect is observed when the size of the particle is very small and comparable to the wavelength of the electron. As the size of a perticle decrease it correspond to the decreasing in confining dimension and it makes the energy levels discrete and this increases or larger the optical band gap.
Quantum dot is certainly a dot whose dimensions is so small that the electrons in the dot are described by wave mechanical laws leading to the quantization of the momentum and energy of the electrons in the material. The dimension could be few lattice constants. As for the manometer dots the effect of the boundary confinement can be negligibly small. However, there will be always electron confinement because of the size reduction effect either massive in the quantum dot or less pronounced in the nanodot.
