As I know Qds and 3D photonic crystals confine the carrier and photon, respectively. but I don't know to choice between these two cases, for fabrication of an optical element, what criteria can be taken?
And finally, to increase efficiency and responsivity in a photodetector, can we use quantum dots in photonic crystal structure?
The QD is nanoparticle of semiconductor or metal, while the photonic crystal is a new term only which designates 3D phase diffractive gratings, that is, optical structures with 3D regular modulation of refractive index.

(compared to the conventional bulk and quantum dot based photodetectors) and if your answer is positive,In your opinion, why the result structure will be more efficient?

What I have in mind, not related so much to the fabrication process of QDs, since unfortunately we do not have access to such technology now :( Therefore, these nano-particles to enter the skin will not find me :) . However, the results reported in the fabrication of self assembled quantum dots, will be used.
I want to use si/sio2 qd system in the simple ring resonator based photodetectors,In these structures, if the photon absorption rate ( EHP creation rate ) is higher, the efficiency will be greater. and in the case of coupling light from the fiber or SOA ( in the destination part of a communication link ) i just know that we will have a lossy coupling.
