What is the difference between non-waking consciousness and subconsciousness?

My research regards the reporting of dreams that anybody can have during the sleep, so during the non-waking consciousness (since a couple of years). The reporting of such dreams seems to be impossible in 'normal' (propositional) language. What could be the reason(s) for this impossibility? Please your answers or suggestions or some relevant literature references. Thank you!
