Both meta epidemiology and meta research , also referred to as meta analysis, are a quantative mechanism of summarizing systematically reviewing literature. The meta epi is a sub area within meta research. You may find this arti useful.
Meta-research includes all kind of secondary research in which data are pooled from primary published/grey/white literature on the subject; it can be either quantitative or qualitative and meta-epidemiology is a sub-type of quantitative meta-research.
I agree with respect to the following explanation about meta-research:
"Meta-research is research on research or the science of science it use research method to study how research done and where improvements can made"
However, I understand meta-analysis is a different concept with meta-epidemiology. Murad MH described the definition of meta-epidemiological study as follows: "meta-epidemiological research adopts a systematic review or meta-analysis to provide data for methodological analysis. The goal is generally broad but often focuses on examining the impact of certain characteristics of clinical
studies on the observed effect, describing the distribution of research evidence in a specific setting, examining heterogeneity and exploring its causes, identifying
and describing plausible biases and providing empirical evidence for hypothesised associations. Unlike classic epidemiology, the unit of analysis for meta-epidemiological studies is a study, not a patient. The outcomes of meta-epidemiological studies are usually not clinical outcomes"(Evid Based Med. 2017 Aug;22(4):139-142.)
I understand the definition of meta-epidemiology and meta-research. However, I do not know the difference of meta-epidemiology and meta-research.
I would like to know the relationship between meta-epidemiology and meta-research.
For me, meta-epidemiology is related with the study of factors that help explaining variability among SRs & MAs about any topic. Similar to what sub-group or meta-regression approaches mean in the case of a single SR & MA.
Meta-research or research-on-research is the area of knowledge studying how-science-makes-science. It is focused on the implementation of methods for conducting or reporting results of secondary studies, by analysing their quality, appropriateness, source of biases, reproducibility, dissemination.
Thank you for telling me your definition about meta-epidemiology, meta-research and research-on-research. I agree with you in that meta-research and research-on-research are almost the same concepts.
