According to Clarivate analytics representatives, the main list is SCIE. But Thomson Reurers has recently introduced a scheme in which manu uprising journal can be added to ESCI: Thes journals will not have an impact factor, but if they maintained their quality, a yealy review may upgrade them into SCIE.
The SCIE means that the SCI was expanded, and more functions were added to the database. The ESCI journals are a category of journals that are included in this database (WoS) on a trial basis, that is, they are candidates for full inclusion in the database with an impact factor if these journals will follow correctly the database conditions.
Please note that the company name is Clarivate Analytics now, and not Thomson Reuters. Thomson Reuters sold their “Intellectual Property & Science business” to Clarivate Analytics in 2016. The first citation index in print for published articles was the Science Citation Index (SCI). A larger web based version of Science Citation Index with the name Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) is now available. Presently, you can access SCIE through Web of Science, which has some other core collections too such as Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Book Citation Index, Conference Proceedings Citation Index, and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).
The ESCI (Emerging Sources Citation Index) was launched as a new database within Web of Science (WoS) platform. All journals submitted to the WoS will be evaluated for the ESCI first, and if found suitable, indexed in the ESCI. Please note that journals indexed in the ESCI will not have Impact Factors, but journals indexed in ESCI, in course of time, based on their acceptability and citations, will be considered for impact factors.
ISI-IF is three categories: ESCI, SCIE then SCI. First of all, journals accepted for coverage in ESCI must meet the criteria of:
1) Peer reviewed
2) Follows ethical publishing practices
3) Meets technical requirements
4) Has English language bibliographic information
5) Recommended or requested by a scholarly audience of Web of Science users
Then after that, the journal must be under revaluation for year or more. If Clarivate Analytics found the journal is suitable, it will be classified under the name of ESCI and become ISI master list without Impact Factor. Later on, if the journal get IF, it will be classified under SCIE
