Very interesting question. It relates to the history of how terms spread around in the former republics.

The terms are not exactly the same; "stoma" means mouth and there are other things in the mouth besides teeth.

The meaning is different like you said. However Dentist is the physician not only practicing the problems of teeth, but problems of Periodontium, oral mucosa, TMJ, maxilla-facial region and etc, too.

Stomatologist does the same. 

In Germany Zahnartz - Teeth Doctor, is also equal to meaning of Dentist.

What I say is Stomatologist generally = Dentist.

In Spain Stomatologist was the person who had finished Medicine and later had a especiliation of 2 years in stomatology. But now, everibody, doctors or not, have to study Odontology during 5 years so they are called Odontologist.

In Italy, many years ago, if you wanted to become a dentist, you had to study Medicine and after Odontostomatologia. So Odontostomatologist was a person, graduated in Medicine, who started a specialty, called Odontostomatologia. Now, in Italian University, Medicine is divided from Dentistry so Odontostomatologia doesn't exist. If you want to become a dentist you must study Dentistry, not Medicine. People, commonly, use the term dentist, which is more popular and understandable. Dentist is linked with the term "dens, dentis" (tooth) which is the first thing a person connects with your profession.  As matter of fact, I think the term Odontostomatologia is more completed because it means that the dentist, doesn't look (or visit), treat only teeth, but also the mouth with its anatomic structures. It explains better the role of prevention of diseases, recognized by health authorities. Prevention as regards oral pathology, Periodontology ... What does the term dentist tell about Periodontium? Nothing, told my teacher. The dentist works on teeth (for Italians, it easier understand this concept because of latin language) according this description. But if you use the term Odontostomatologist you mean you work on teeth and mouth, you know about teeth and mouth. Its explains better what you are doing, your field of knowledge. Naturally, because of communication, the term dentist is more used than Odontostomatologist. I think it's be nice to regain the old meaning (odontos= tooth; stomatos = mouth) of that term.

Sinceramente es lo mismo con diferentes títulos: Estomatología, Odontología, Cirugía Dental etc la diferencia no esta en el título sino en el programa de estudio de cada universidad.

The term Stomotologia is the Greek  equal of  the term (oral medicine ) ,which means the study of the normal oral opening and the included structures ( teeth, periodontal tissues , tongue ,salivary glands and other oral tissues )  and the abnormal findings including diseases ,tumors...etc.

While the term Dentist should refers scientifically and ethically to the same above meanings, it has been shown and  for unknown reasons we as dentist are focusing mainly  on teeth in a way that we might miss serious lesions and  conditions that if was diagnosed early could save the patient  time, money and even life.

So a Good strategy to follow as dentist is to examine the oral cavity and the related structures  first         ,then search  for dental cavity and other dental diseases .

In Germany there were three terms: Zahnarzt, Stomatologe, Dentist

The equivalent to the english term "dentist" is called in the original West-German countries: "Zahnarzt", and in the countries of the formerly "GDR" :"Stomatologe".

After World War II we had not enough dentists in Western Germany, so dental technicians could make a "upgrade" to work as a dentist. They were called: "Dentist", to separate them from "Zahnarzt". I think nowadays there is no working "Dentist" left in Germany.

A Stomatologist is a Dentist specialist in Oral Medicine which is between Medicine and Dentistry.

In some countries the Stomatologist studied General Medicine and continue with Oral Medicine specialization. 

Is the same, the difference are in the university study program!!!

"Stomatology" or even "Stomatognatology" is an evolution of the term "Dentistry" or "Odontology".

As science evolves, the definition of any given science evolves and as a consequence the concept must evolve.

In Venezuela the first term used was Dentistry and eventually was named Odontology (Odontología) and the previous concept was left to refer to an empirical, non-academic practice.

Even though the heart and crib of our profession are the teeth; our profession studies and treats a lot more... the entire mouth and masticatory system (stoma and gnatos), meaning soft and hard tissues that comprise and limit such system.

Some universities have adopted the use of the Stomatology noun, such as:

Besides being a "Dentist" I am a "Stomatological Physician" (Médico Estomatólogo) which is synonym to Oral or Oral and Maxillofacial Physician, but over here some medical doctors refer to me just as a Stomatologist as distinct to Dentist, which is not right.

In conclusion:

Dentist=Odontologist=Stomatologist=Stomatognatologist (a bit too complicated to use LOL).

Stomatology is the evolution of the former.
