Consider all, but choose one of the Magic Words of Research (Effect, Impact, Role, Difference and Relation). Frame your research question so that it seeks to find one of the MWRs, otherwise it is not research.
Examples in order:
"How does humour encourage viewers to purchase goods they see advertised in TV soap operas?
"What is the impact of longer ad breaks on viewership?
"What is the role of (the broadcaster's) gender in selecting which ads to insert in soapies?"
"Does the media inform or brainwash?"
"What is the functional relation between the number of hours of cable TV watched and the income level of women?"
Impact described a sense of influence usually forceful while effect describe a result /outcome/change due to some action or intervention.Effect normally have measurable variables that can state the outcome of an intervention.
The key difference between impact and effect is that impact is the influence of an action/phenomenon on something or someone whereas effect is the consequence or outcome of an action or a phenomenon
Some researchers prefer to use influence when they are doing a qualitative research or want to employ descriptive analysis. They also prefer to use effect or impact when doing a quantitative research or analysis. These preferences are based on the idea that impact or effect are measurable or narrow and influence is broad and cannot be easily measured. However, I think that influence, effect or impact can be used synonymously. The direction or the focus of your research may be determined by the research methodology. In research influence can be assessed through impact or effect.
Effect and Impact are English words that could be used interchangeably but caution must be employed in their usage in research . Impact is a ''Strong effect'' in research. for example , if I strike a ball -A, not necessarily in the direction of B, I will like to determine the effect on B But in Impact, I made a deliberate effort to strike A in the direction of B, I will expect a ''stronger effect''. So Impact will consider a cause -effect relationship in research and there is a basis for comparison. Influence could be used more for qualitative studies though it could be the mild outcome of both.
