It generally is not a good idea to reduce volumetric efficiency by adding restriction to the air intake system such as a flow orifice. You could use a calibrated laminar flow element sized sufficiently for your application (i.e., acceptable delta-P and calibrated flow within the range of flow necessary for your engine). You could also adapt the use of a standard automotive hot-wire mass air-flow sensor that is separately calibrated versus a traceable flow standard. These are typically much cheaper than using an LFE, are available from automotive parts suppliers, can be quite accurate if properly calibrated, and they maintain calibration very well during use as long as they are protected from contamination. Just make sure to select one with an appropriate range of flow for your application.
