Members of genus Panthera are considered as 'big cats', which includes the Lion, Leopard, Tiger, Jaguar, and Snow Leopard, and along with Panthera, at times the closely related Clouded Leopard as well. However, because the ability to roar is cited as a major factor/characteristic in distinguishing between big and small cats, does the inability to roar make snow leopard a small cat? Moreover, many researchers consider the non-pantherines such as cheetah, lynx, and cougar as big cat. Is it a genus based approach where Panthera is considered big cat, or should we consider Pantherines (members of genus Panthera) excluding snow leopard as big cats, or can a size-based approach be taken into account?
I was unable to find a satisfactory answer to this query, thus I'm interested in other researchers' views regarding the scientific base of the term 'Big Cat', Please correct me if I'm missing anything. Thanks in advance.
