Hello,

I am a PhD student for the Chicago School of Professional Psychology working on my dissertation and I hope that someone can answer my question regarding reference groups or dummy coding.

My study has a moderated-mediation framework which resulted to me utilizing Process by Hayes.

Part of my variables is Gender which I coded 1 = Male and 2 = Female in my survey. I am having difficulty determining which one will be the reference group for this variable as the book only describes coding of 0 and 1 where the 0 becomes the reference group.

I have exhausted the information on the book of Hayes on Process and I have done the due diligence of researching about this but I am not having any luck in finding out the answer.

Will be 1 = male become a default 0? or is there a hard rule about the reference group for Hayes Process?

Thank you kindly for any of your input.
