It is well known that one of the major costs of micro-algae production is harvesting. Due to poor separation of cells, a large quantity of the product is lost. Lowering this cost may be a break through to the micro-algae production cost. I know the traditional ways of separation, but I want to know if there is any new techniques.
Electrolysis could be something to look at, at least it will boost the efficiency.

pH-induced self flocculation could be a good strategy because in alkaline pH (>10) cell settled down then you may use a decanter and this step could reduce up 80% and sometimes it is up 90% of total volume (depends upon algal sp. and cultivation conditions) and then you may go for centrifugation.

As far as I know there is none. However, sieving can also be significantly improved and automated, but designing and automation needs some mechanical engineering know how. Ordinary sieves may not be appropriate for large scale. Is there any automated sieving technology so far?
