There has been recent concerns on the impact of foreign telenovelas on the moral upbringing of the youth as well as the development or 'destruction' of cultures. Should these telenovelas be encourged? What impacts do they have on the progression of the cultures of people?
How can we tailor them to meet the cultural demands of societies?
Telenovelas are culturally immersed works and they somehow become highly visible because of factors and elements which the marketers and producers package into their presentation. No doubt, they are cultural influencers and their impact on behavior need to be measured further and in different cultures with appropriate tools. However, there is no doubt that they have cultural impact; even the alteration they bring to audience schedules and the passion with which they are consumed shows that there is so much to read into their cultural impact. Censorship for whatever reason may not be the way to go. There should be other culturally strategic measures that would address a number of challenges that come with them. The presence of equally attractive alternatives in any indigenous culture would be one major counter influence and a more important positioning against cultural imperialism.
In Brazil, telenovelas have a strong implication in culture, especially since audiences are checked all the time in relation to connection and identification with roles and themes represented. In addition, in the most realistic novels, this connection is made through the relation with referents in the "outside world" - by allusion or by the presence of knowing people. In this case, soundtracks, costumes, stage decor, everything influences people's behavior and choices. Watching telenovelas, especially those of Rede Globo, is a way to learn about the new, the fashion. More fanciful novels also refer to reality by allegory, creating another kind of interaction.
The "telenovelas" are a product of a society in a concrete period and place. They show hidden aspects of the mentality and social customs, even of the politics of a state. Everything that a society creates reveals these aspects, from Paleolithic paintings through TV series.

I find "Sex and the city" really bad but they send it in Finland night after night, year after year. It impacts the sex moral in a negative way.
