There is no critical concentration. If the concentration is too low, the beads will not be strong enough. The strength depends on the molecular weight, calcium concentration and the grade of alginate (species of seaweed...). Try a solution at 1% w/w and adjust, depending on the results.
Encapsulated nano- and microparticles of peppermint al-coholic extract were synthesized by the principle involving cation induced controlled gelification of alginate. Briefly, calcium chloride (1.5%) was added to sodium alginate solution (1%) containing peppermint alcoholic extract (2 mL). Then tween 80 was added to the solution to improve wet-tability. Shape and size of nanoparticles were deter-mined using scanning electron microscopy.
