At Soil Science Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, we calculate the rice straw yield as oven dry basis. So far I know, IRRI also followed the same. But some reviewers suggested to calculate straw yield as sun dry basis. So, question arises what is the correct?
My answer is oven dry basis. If we calculate as sun dry basis, rice straw yield will be much higher than grain yield and that will be misleading data.
Biomass yield of herbaceous plant material (i.e., straw, corn stalks, forages, etc) is either expressed on a 'dry matter' or 'as is' basis. Dry matter basis is akeen to what you call oven dry basis and units of Mg DM / ha or kg DM / m3 are typically used. As is basis is akeen to what you call sun dry basis and units of T/ha or t/acre (in North America) at X moisture content. The appropriate basis to express units of biomass yield on are all dependent on who you will be presenting the data to. Scientific journals will expect that yields are expressed on a DM basis although there are some exceptions. If you present data to agricultural producers or an industry audience, using as is basis to the best approach because these people deal with a large quantities of this material on an as is basis.

from researchers/scientists point of view, straw yields should be presented on oven-dry weight basis. Yields recorded and reported on sun- or air-dry weight basis from different regions can not be compared, as the sun-dried straw may contain different levels of moisture depending on relative humidity of the atmosphere in those regions. Moreover, we use grain and straw yield data for determining total nutrients uptake by the crop, and nutrient concentrations in grain and straw are always analysed and reported on oven-dry weight basis. I earlier worked in the Soils and Water Science Division of IRRI for 5 (five) years: from 1984 to 1987 and from 1992 to 1994, and we always recorded and reported our straw yield data on oven-dry weight basis.
I want to know what the process of rice straw weight measurement like temperature, moisture, how much time need to keep in oven and which temperature,please
We usually dry the straw samples at 80 degree Celsius for more than 48 hours (max. 72 0hours) until a constant weight attained.
