While surveying the literature to find optimal cut-off frequencies to filter a set of force platform data, I quickly found that some research groups filtered their data, and others did not. I can't seem to find a good reason as to why you would, or would not, filter force plate data. At first I thought it had to do with your dependent variables (e.g., if you wanted COP velocities, theoretically you would filter the data to reduce the noise amplification during the differentiation process), but then I found several papers who calculated COP velocities without filtering first.

Can anyone provide some insight into why you should or should not filter the data? Thanks.
