I wanted to know how the chemical structure of PANI and its interaction with solvent on a molecular level with change with change of pH, with an explanation for the reversible change in color observed. If someone could also relate and explain it with UV-vis absorption correlation, it would be great for me
Polyaniline is an electrically conducting long chain molecule with important applications in printed circuit board manufacture and antistatic surface coatings. In processing it is used as a surfactant dispersion in water and its electrical conductivity increases strongly under low pH th (acidic) conditions. The colour changes are related to degree of polymerization and the length of single-double bond chain molecular structures that are present. In such structures the vibration modes of the valence electrons are delocalised and establish absorption bands at UV/visible light frequencies. The associated light absorption bands thus migrate from high frequency UV levels toward the red and ultimately the infrared part of the spectrum as the size of the resonant delocalised structures increases.
