I think that you could get a satisfactory result with solvent extraction, since one of the most important compounds of grapefruit is the sesquiterpene nootkatone with a high boling temperature. I preferably use HS-SPME but it works better for low boiling compounds.
The choice of the method among the available techniques depends on the funds and facilities at your disposal and your objective for obtaining the volatiles from a given plant material i.e. experimental or industrial use. Researchers Have listed several techniques for isolating essential oils from plant materials in response to Prof. Vinesh Kumar's query "What are the techniques used for the extraction of essential oils from a plant?" I suggest you to scan the responses from different researchers and select a technique or techniques that is/are suitable and convenient to you. The choice of the technique and the way the plant material is distilled or extracted has a bearing on the resultant essential oil or product (on both yield and chemical composition). A better method is to test more than one technique and examine the composition of the resultant product.
Volatiles for attraction to insects and various methods have been adopted and confused me what to do.Funds are the bottleneck so the precise technique i am exploring. Thank you
If your objective is to produce volatile chemicals to attract insects, you should read articles on pheromones. Pheromones are a class of compounds widely used in entomology to attract insects for controlling them. I suggest you to search for reviews on pheromones in Google Scholar or Scopus and other scientific search engines. Pheromones are probably available in the market and you can request for free samples from companies or fellow researchers (entomologists).
Essential oils and their volatile components generally repel insects, therefore used as natural pesticides. Essential oil sprayed leaves are not normally eaten by insects. If your insects/pests are attracted by honey, you can try to mix honey with your volatiles. Alternatively you can try solvent extract as suggested by Ms. Bianchi.
What is your objective? To attract insects to kill them or to attract them for pollination?
