I would start with books of Donald McQuarrie or L.D. Landau. Moreover you can follow the lectures of Prof. Mehran Kardar from the Open Course Ware website of MIT (ocw.mit.edu).

I would first go through Thermal physics by Schroeder. Some of the concepts of Statistical Mechanics used in that book is more than excellent. Then, pick something more advanced books like by McQuarrie.

As you declared to be a fresh mind i propose you as a training this simulated experiment. It is an activity i use for my students and i have had good results every time i proposed it to them. I apologize it is in italian but i think that pictures and formulas will let you understand the main features of it.

I tried to learn statistical mechanics from Reif and Pathria. But I was not happy with my understanding. Recently I learned it following Mehran Kardar’s MIT Opencourseware and I am very happy. I admit that the book ”Statistical Physics of Fields(by Mehran Kardar)” is terse and is meant for advanced students, along with the video lectures it is lucid. I also like the book by James Sethna which caters students at a more preliminary level. The problems are designed quite nicely. I would recommend this book for a beginner.
