Please would you share information on the best ways to raise funds for running a non-profit organization that seeks to improve farm productivity for small-scale farmers in developing countries. Thank you!
With agriculture, you have a wide range of funding sources. Writing a very good grant proposal is key in raising funds. You should be focused on organisations that have special interest in agricultural modernisation. If you want funding from the state, I will advise you buy into existing plans and identify where your project will fit.
Overall, search for key interest of organisations where your project fit most and write a very good proposal.
Fund raising for NGO is an art and requires strategic thinking. The planning process for fund raising can be done into ways: supply or demand side planning.
The supply planning focuses on identifying finance providers (government, international NGOs, individual philanthropists, companies, etc., ) and know what sectors and activities they are interested. So, based on their interest you can develop proposals, fund raising events and send important personalities to convince and get the necessary fund.
The second approach is demand side planning approach where identify the critical developmental /social/environmental problem of a certain community/locality and given a legitimate demand go for potential financial sources.
Personally, I go for the second approach, where you know first your communities problem and look for a partner, instead of the other way round.
You are right to exploit both worlds. But, we have to dictate and able to channel external resources towards our internal and community priority development interventions. Otherwise, if external assistance is not mainstreamed into our internal development programs, sometimes it may end up with its adverse effect outweighing its benefit. Take the experience of African development history and performance since independence, 1960s. So, in a nutshell, external assistance-cum-self generated development priorities.
Non-governmental organizations are mostly non-profit organizations and seek to establish programs in their area of expertise and to obtain funds from them, which requires you to prepare programs and work hard to convince them With appreciation
