Hi Richard,

I just found a paper (Anal. Chem. 2004, 76, 4271-4278) that uses freeze-dried mouse brain sections to determine lipids by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF SIMS). Read the attached article and I hope you will be able to get some clues.
