Many in-service teachers were not trained on ICT integration. COVID 19 has made it clear that teachers need to have been well versed with the use of ICT in teaching and learning environment. This was not the case in developing nations and this has caused great violation of the right to education in many countries. Is it possible to have all teachers able to teach with technology? If so how?
I would recommend to choose time and process as a perspective, instead of confusing them with terminology as ”e-learning”, ”online learning”, ”distance learning” or with imagining that ICT integration means total disruption of existing teaching practices, or to discuss what is new technology or not. Instead:
First, discuss what the teachers are used to do - as hold lessons, give homework, review homework, solve and discuss problems, introduce next section of the curriculum, etc. On a meta-level, this is done in a time-based shift pattern between a synchronous modality (as a co-located lession f2f in a classroom) and asynchronous activities (as book or text reading or doing assignment at home when it suits the student, but before a deadline, usually next synchronous session).
Then rethink this pattern of shifting synchronous and asynchronous work with also digital tools available (synchronous: video conference sessions, chat, audio/telephone meeting - and asynchronous: digital texts and assignments, recorded lectures, educational films, etc) to mix with the traditional tools.
So if classrooms cannot be used, use other ways to interact synchronously instead, as audio or video conference, or even a chat. Then if students already have books, use them for the asynchronous part- and follow up and proceed in next synchronous interaction.
