I want to determine the 'dominant frequency' in a FFT spectrum on EEG data (21 electrodes) (also termed peak-frequency, background rhythm frequency, alpha peak frequency etc.).
Usually this peak-frequency is most outspoken in the occipital electrodes, however in that case I limit myself to only two electrode positions (O1 and O2). However, if I take all electrode positions I run the risk of missing the actual 'peak'.
Would you recommend using the 'occipital peak' or the 'global peak' averaged over all electrodes? And is there any literature to substantiate this?

Avoid fft. Try power spectral density by welch method. The most effective way to find the dominant band find the relative change of the bands with respect to the band power at rest condition which is also known as relative power. I have applied this method several times in my articles. For more clarification we can continue our discussion. All the best for your research.
