First of all, what you mean with "automatic recognition"?
You must use satellites for the plumes of big rivers (maybe all the plume in an image) and can use drones with colour films for small ones: or a difference in colour or a difference due to the presence of large amounts of sediments will show you what you are looking for. In my experience, the use of the infrared film is not necessary.
Agree automatic? This intent suggests river mouth means intersecting with large water body or ocean. The human observer or automated detector must be able to look for and detect characteristic indicators, such as delta, braiding accumulation, and perhaps change in water clarity if photo was taken after rainfall event. Green LiDAR, time series photos to show changes in deltas, braiding or sediment accumulation, water clarity through time. Orientation of river mouth to outlet can cause variation in sediment accumulation in estuarine, marine tidal interface. And sediment loading is seldom constant due to storm severity, erosion, land use, river dredging or other activities, landslides, etc. On the other hand, photos and other indicators should be able to detect some degree of quantity or quality differences that could be helpful. If one obtained with good timing the satellite image after severe regional event, one might be able from storm plume size, color and extent compare basin or river outlets of similar size. If you have real time stream gauging stations online, the bankfull event is often one with high degree of sediment delivery.
Dear Doctor Catena, I am referring to a computerized procedure capable of recording in a semi-automatic way the plumes coming from a river and poured into the sea. Of course I expect that the distribution of these, the output speed, the direction (and many other parameters) can greatly affect the solid transportation along the coast. Being able to record the frequency, size, direction etc ... of these plumes could help in reconstructing the dynamics of the beach. The solid transport naturally occurs from aerial photos as large brown spots, with various facets.

The initial difficult approach that I think there may be in managing a large amount of satellite data (initially regardless of whether it is pre or post a large flood event) I think is linked to the chromatic variability that the surface of the water can have.
