I suppose the experiences are different as well as the ways someone comes to these ideas.
Research what excites you! You have no control over how often your paper might be cited in the future. But if you are in biology, then biodiversity studies are popular right now :)

New data for challenging contemporary development issues. The data would be widely used and by extension the author(s) would be highly cited.
- In my opinion, he best you can do is pick a field and an adviser that are popular, as papers in that field/with that adviser are more likely to get read and be highly regarded. You then need to get on the right project, with the right collaborators, the right data. Refute a well-regarded existing idea, come up with a profound new idea, make a highly applicable method (new idea), and generate a dataset no one else can match which is highly usable.
Dialectical and contradictory thinking is an important source of creative ideas.
