I have a binary polymer blend, compounds of thermoplastic polyurethan and Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. I want to eliminate ABS from my system in order to find the microstructure of the blend. Which solvent is the best for eliminating ABS? How much time does it take to break down ABS from this binary system. The important point is that this solvent shouldn't damage polyurethane.

There are several types of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) terpolymer. It was earlier developed as a blend of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN), which is known as 'type-A'. Due to the different types that have since them been developed, and because commercialized products usually contain several additives that may interfere with solubility, the following solvents are tentatively proposed, and may possibly be less effective for some commercial formulations of ABS than for 'type-A' ABS depleted of additives. As suitable solvents for ABS in general, we may propose aniline, some ketones (e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone), acetate esters (e.g. butyl acetate), and a few chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g. benzyl chloride, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, 1,2-dichloroethane). Mixtures of the aforementioned solvents can be also considered. From the previously mentioned solvents ─ suggested for ABS ─ butyl acetate appears to be reasonably selective for ABS with respect to polyurethane.
