Quality of life is a ubiquitous concept in social science and health literature.The phrase “quality of life” appeared in response to rapid technological health care innovations prolonging quantity of life.
Nurses have made important contributions to our understanding of this concept. What is the best nursing theory for quality of life promotion?
I am grateful to Caroline Ellis Hill and Carol Pound for introducing this author to me... not just for nursing but for healthcare generally I think Todres' approach to humanisation is well worth a read

I find the mid range theory of Integrative Nurse Coaching(Barbara Dossey) the most useful for promoting QOL in patients and in the health care practitioner. It is based on the grand theory of Integral Nursing (Dossey). The mid range theory and the role of nurses as health and wellness coaches (with a national certification) enables nurses across the spectrum of care to support clients in their personal healing. There is a focus on self development (self reflection, self assessment self care and self evaluation for both the client and practitioner). I certification as an Integrative Nurse Coach a way to translate holistic nursing into mainstream medicine-certainly using a holistic approach to the definition and support of QOL.

Do you think a mid range theory is useful in real situations for patient care in hospitals or quality of life promotion ? I think there are many gaps between theories and reality in the hospitals.
Definitely-we use the theory to guide nurse's in the development of coaching skills-so needed to assist patients in determining realistic goals and developing their action plans-it also guides the inter professional relationships incorporating other social science theories such as motivational interviewing, appreciative inquiry and story theory-all supporting holistic approaches to pt care and the care of the practitioner. If practitioners aren't practicing self care it is difficult to sustain a caring, healing environment and therapeutic presence.
