I'm not sure if it has been used for snake monitoring but the Black Trakka tracking tunnel is a unobtrusive, cost effective and safe way of carrying out species identification and monitoring.

Take a look at the links and see if it could be adapted to what you need. I've used it be for and it works brilliantly for insect, lizards, mammals and can differentiate between sex's.
