I need to measure the temperature of a refrigerant fluid that flows into an insulated copper tube. Is there a need to drill the tube and weld a thermometer so that it measures the temperature in contact with the fluid or can the measurement be made externally? Does anyone know if there is any study in this direction?
You can only "measure" the radiant temperature of a surface without direct contact; so, technically, the answer is, "yes, you must penetrate into the flow and install some device." Anything less will just be a guess. If you care about accuracy, then you must measure directly. If the refrigerant is saturated, then you can measure the pressure and calculate the temperature, but this only works for saturation and only if you are certain of the fluid properties (or composition).

To determine the temperature of the refrigerant in the suction line, measure the temperature of the exact pipe. That approximate temperature can be useful. Inappropriate refrigerant charge can actually lead to compressor burnout.
In a project we are using temperature sensors directly attached to the external aluminium pipe due to budgetary reasons. How can we measure the temperature of the refrigerant inside the pipe from the external temperature of the pipe?
