As i read, Hypoaspis miles is being successfully multiplied on mould mite, Tyrophagus putrescentiae Schrank in Brazil. For details you may please contact Dr. Gilberto de Moraes, Brazil
When I was studying scale insects of Diaspididae family, I was observing concentration of Hypoaspis miles at insertion of palms cultivated in a glasshouse. At this site were many scales of dead Diaspis. Otherwise, my idea is that concentrations of dead bodies of a armoured scale insect (whatever are the species and the host plant) is convenient for mass culturing Hypoaspis miles.
I have been successful feeding Hypoaspis miles with Tyrophagus putrescentiae. But T.p. at high levels in a Hypoaspis culture will eat the eggs of Hypoaspis and ammonia will overwhelm H.m.. T.p. on certain food types such as wheat bran will disperse throughout the media. On some dry dog food T.p. will remain on the food in large sessile populations and not disperse allowing the H.m. to feed at will. I am attaching a modified version, pictures added version, of a hard to find,1999 paper by Marilyn Steiner, Stephen Goodwin, Tony Wellham which provides information. Some dry dog food contains additives to control storage mites, this can complicate the dry dog food system. Somehow having a continuous or regular weekly food supply for Hypoaspis gets the desired population increase.
In my cultures the Hypoaspis could be seen consuming the Protonymph & Tritonymph stages of Tyrophagus. Hypos would ignore the eggs, adults. When feeding Hypos in petri dish cultures I would apply 1 cc of Tyrophagus and was amazed to see the Hypos quickly moving toward the 1 cc living moving mass. It is my opinion that Hypoaspis locate their prey my sounds, not odors. I found a on line a video recording of cat ear mites and was amazed at the sound level that this species produced.
