We, scholars, are writing a lot. The language of science today is the English, however, for many of us, English is not our mother tongue. Even though we may be fluent in English. I found grammar check programmes/applications useful. Do you have recommendations about such apps? I am using MS Office grammar check (of course) and also I started to use Grammarly. Do you think there are better programmes (apps) or which are you using?

There are still limitations. An English grammar check app is only really useful if English is your first language because you still have to make decisions about grammar. You can either improve your own English through courses or use an English proof reader
Grammar check becomes useful only after you are able to express yourself professionally. For publications, I think grammerly can help alot but not before putting up a reproducible, logical and proven concept from your studies

I agree that you should have a decent level of English (an app is not going to supplement your English, it can just improve it) and also that you should have the ability to express yourself so the concept of your work would-be logical etc. But I disagree that it has to be a mother tongue level. Even now I sometimes see that the suggestion that the app is giving me is not good (wrong preposition, the word or formulation that I used better describes the concept than the suggested one etc.), so there is still need for discretion to apply the suggestion or not, but for resolving this you do not have that high level of English. I think B2-C1 level is sufficient. But even if I am C1 (at leat my certificate is saying that so :) ) English is still a foreign language for me and the app is helping me a lot.
So many basically same answers. Isn't that a secret advertisement? Is grammarly really only good application or only application that are we using?
I also started to use Grammarly years ago, but it was necessary to pay all options at that time. Then I found useful the free Noun Plus, especially for technical writing. I already checked two books of my own translation into English. Without additional proof-reading you can check its quality in the e-version of What after Democracy? published here, too. When I sent smaller texts to my friend in England to proof-read after checking with Noun Plus, she didn't have many remarks... The most problems I had with attempts to translate in my Slovene written long sentences. Try to keep clean language on that level...
