In my workgroup, Maxima (maxima.sourceforge.net) is used for all computer algebra applications, and I am also using it in my courses. It solves most of my computer algebra problems very well and the students really like it. However, its position among the other open source computer algebra systems seems not to be similarly exceptional as the position of R (r-project.org) in the field of statistics. I would like to know about your experiences in this field. Which is the best general purpose open-source computer algebra software, i.e. which of these packages prepares our students the best way for a wide range of applications?

In KDE, Cantor is a very nice frontend to mathematical software like Maxima, Sage, R and KAlgebra.
I find it very useful for working with Maxima, getting results rendered by LaTeX.

Thank you for this link, I'll check this. I've seen that in Ubuntu Euler can be accessed directly in the Softwarecenter. The only open source Matlab replacement I knew so far is Octave, http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/, which you probably know. Is Euler comparable to Octave for numerical calculations?

For general information, Xcos (provided with newer versions of Scilab, replacing the original Scicos package- which was developed by INRIA) includes a modelica compiler. Whether this particular implementation is as optimized or versatile as the Jmodelica environment, I can not say...Scicos is still available from http://www-rocq.inria.fr/scicos/ and may be a bit more mature than the newer Xcos.

I have used Scilab extensively for years, but only occasionally the Scicos package. I have used Scilab under both Windows and Linux- preferring Linux, of course. Scilab has recently switched to Xcos, which appears to be very similar to Scicos (apparently based on Scicos), but there do seem to be some issues with the latest releases. The interface for Scilab has improved by orders of magnitude since I first started using it. However, I would suggest, if you are using Linux, use the versions from the distro repository rather than the latest releases from the Scliab site- I believe they are more stable. Some people seem to have trouble with video drivers when trying to plot from Scilab, but I have not encountered this- I use Intel integrated graphics with no problems (other than Intel Integrated graphics is somewhat limited...)
Octave also has available some simulation packages, but I am not that familiar with it, whether it would be compatible with Modelica or not.
For me Maxima is the best CAS tool. Sage seems to be pretty useful but is harder to start with it.
I used to use Maple some years ago (and sometimes now) and the capability that I miss is the PDE solver that is powerful.

Yes, that's true, the ODE and PDE capabilies of Maxima are very limited. Does anybody know if there is an open source computer algebra software with subtantially better ODE and PDE capabilies compared to Maxima?
I'm an author of CoCoA (http://cocoa.dima.unige.it), a CAS with a syntax similar to R.
It is mainly focussed on Commutative Algebra, so does not have (yet) ODEs and PDEs. But it is open source, so hopefully ... ;-)
What about SAGE? that is general purpose and offers a common interface to many open source libraries/systems.
Sage is powerful but I find the interface more complicated than Maxima.
Sage is quite nice, and it also includes GAP, the Groups, Algorithms, and Programming suite. GAP itself is copyleft, and has its own language.
The initial learning curve for Sage, or even GAP, is slightly higher than for maxima, but at least on the groups, semigroups, and automata side, GAP is pretty stunning.
That's the main problem for me.. but I have used the notebooks in SAGE and they are great!!

I am using Maxima for Calc1 and 3, I like it, is pretty simple and powerful.
SageMath, allow you to create Jupyter Notebooks, where you can have Markdown for R, Python and Sage. Sage use similar syntaxis than maxima, and you can do symbolic calculations like derivatives and integrals, however is not as friendly than maxima, the code is bit outdated, similar to the beginning of the code done for macsyma. I dont know, I had high hopes, but i get disappointed fast due to the added complexity when you want to do fast computations. Worth a try, you may like it.
