I am the one who developed the OIF (Optimum Index Factor) and the Selective Principal Component methods in trying to use a statistical method to identify the combination that has the most information with the least amount of duplication. You can try those methods, and others that are similar, but like it was suggested I think you can get 'general' information from Landsat TM and ASTER type systems, but to get an exact match hyperspectral data will be better (may still not do the job because of vegetation cover). Depending on your area of interest (arid / forest / or ?) the spatial resolutions of Landsat type imaging system might not be sufficient --- that is the mix pixel signature may do you in.
